The last photo was probably taken in the 1940s (but needs confirmation) when Edwin was a press operator at Tate and Lyle, Silvertown.

My grandfather, Bill Kelly, also worked at Tate and Lyle in the drawing office, serving an apprenticeship, before the Second World War.

Edwin Norton’s parents also worked at Tate and Lyle and allegedly ran the first canteen at Silvertown. Rumour goes that Edwin’s father sacked his wife, who worked for him in the canteen, because she changed the menu, while he was away and without his permission. Apparently, she never recovered, became depressed, and officially died of ‘melancholy’ some time after.
